Trimmed clips are written as H.264 at CRF 20 with AAC audio and faststart — high quality, and immediately playable everywhere.
Fast trimming works by copying streams and can only cut at keyframes, which in typical footage appear every two to ten seconds. That is why some tools silently start your clip earlier than you asked.
Re-encoding the range costs processing time but gives you the exact frame. For short clips that difference is worth a few seconds of waiting.
